The 1 hryvnia circulation coin "Volodymyr the Great" is dedicated to Grand Kyiv Duke and public figure Volodymyr the Great during whose rule the formation of the ancient Rus-State was accomplished and Christianity as a state religion was introduced.
The 1 hryvnia circulation coin was put into circulation on 12 March 1997. The 1 hryvnia circulation coin "Volodymyr the Great" was put in to circulation on 25 October 2004 and were minted at the NBU Banknote Printing and Minting Works.
The obverse of all coins is uniform. At the top of there is the Small Coat of Arms and the issue year thereunder. Within the frame of an old-rus ornament pattern there is a a three-line inscription УКРАЇНА / 1 / ГРИВНЯ (UKRAINE/ 1 /HRYVNIA) and the logo of the National Bank of Ukraine Mint.
On the reverse of the 1 hryvnia circulation coin "Volodymyr the Great" there is depicted Duke Volodymyr the Great holding a cross in his right hand and a conventionalized depiction of the Tithe Church in his left hand, as well as the circular inscription: ВОЛОДИМИР ВЕЛИКИЙ (Volodymyr the Great).
